The Basilisk Isles
Fire & BloodThe Basilisk Isles appear as a distant refuge and a source of danger at sea. Their two recorded connections place them at the edge of Westerosi affairs: corsairs from the islands disrupted a royal marriage contest, and Racallio Ryndoon later escaped there with his surviving supporters.
Raiding and the Maiden’s Day Contest
As noblewomen traveled to King’s Landing for Aegon III’s bride selection, daughters of ancient houses set sail from Myr and Old Volantis. None of the Volantene girls arrived: corsairs from the Basilisk Isles carried them off along the way. The islands thus enter the account not through a described landscape or settlement, but through the danger their corsairs posed to a journey bound for the royal court.
Refuge After the Daughters’ War
When the Daughters’ War ended, Racallio Ryndoon fled south to the Basilisk Isles with his remaining supporters. The conflict’s victors divided the Disputed Lands, while the Dornish gained dominion over most of the Stepstones; Racallio’s flight places the islands beyond that new division as a refuge for a defeated force. Together, the episodes associate the Basilisk Isles with both maritime predation and escape from political defeat.
